Remy Rodden has been writing successful songs
since he was a teenager, and for almost as long he has been
promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. It's
only natural that his first album project Think About the
Planet combines these two passions.
Remy composed extensively during university studies in biology and
environmental education, but it wasn't until moving to the Yukon Territory
in the late 80s that his musical career truly began. A live radio
interview in 1989 from the Frostbite Music Festival in Whitehorse
led to the song Better Living Through
Chemistry being recorded at the regional CBC studio and distributed
nationally. He has since entertained at music festivals, coffeehouses,
conferences, and special events from Halifax to Vancouver to Inuvik--coast
to coast to coast. tapsong.htm
On the environmental education side, Remy has been
involved in many efforts in the Yukon and beyond. Since 1990
he has been leading summer conservation camps for youth aged
12-16 in which students experience nature and environmental
issues first-hand. In addition, he acts as the Yukon's
coordinator for Project WILD, a popular supplementary
environment and conservation education program offered by
the Canadian Wildlife
Federation, or CWF.
It is through his work as Project WILD Coordinator that
the CWF became aware of Remy's talents. As sponsor of
National Wildlife Week in Canada, the Federation was looking
for new ways to promote the celebration. Together, they
conceived doing a 30-second musical PSA--and Remy has
written, performed and produced the "jingle" (in French and
English) all but one year since 1991. Hundreds of radio
stations play the theme song annually. The CWF is a sponsor
of the Think About the Planet recording.
Remy lives in a bilingual household, comprised of three
young boys and partner Marlynn Bourque--a photographer,
graphic artist and dog musher. They live in a solar-powered
house they built themselves in the mountains south of
Whitehorse.
